South Africa’s standard VAT rate is 15%. That is the rate these formulas use. They are general information, not tax advice.
What VAT inclusive and exclusive mean
A VAT-inclusive price already has the tax in it. A VAT-exclusive price does not. To move from one to the other at 15%, use 1.15.
How to calculate a VAT-inclusive price
Inclusive = exclusive × 1.15
Example: R1 000 exclusive × 1.15 = R1 150 inclusive. The VAT is R150.
VAT exclusive formula
Exclusive = inclusive ÷ 1.15
Example: R1 150 inclusive ÷ 1.15 = R1 000 exclusive. The VAT is R150.
The South African VAT calculator page points to the Chrome extension that does both sums for you. Need someone to register or file VAT? The Tax Shop does that work every month.
